Little urn...

Nope, not the one with the short, fat, hairy legs...

This one...

Here we are...Day one of the Ashes series and I, for one, am very excited. The timing of the games couldn't be better really - starts at 1pm so I should see the 2nd half of midweek day's play.
I'll probably end up seeing more of this Ashes series than the last. Especially as I'll be in Australia for the last 2 tests.

Mystic Gartside says....

Australia to win the final test and take the series 2-1.

Top run scorers - Eng: Strauss......Aus: Martyn
Top wicket takers - Eng: Anderson......Aus: Warne (obviously)

Other news - Jacks Hit got back on track last night with a crushing win on the bowling green. Rob, Casey and I were the last to leave the club (again) after staying for a few beers and a game of darts. Considering this is a social event and they virtually give the booze away, the fact that everyone else had left and they were kicking us out to lock up at 9.30 (only 2 hours after play ended) was disappointing.
What else can I tell you? The Borat film opens here today and I'm off to see it. Quite excited at the prospect of watching a moustachioed Lunt cavort round the US for 2 hours.

IT'S MY BIRTHDAY EVE

gartside - ashes - one word: bothered.

nah, seriously, no offence to people like yourselves who have a genuine and long-term passion for cricket. it's the band-wagon jumping "yay! go england!" brigade last time around that really hack me off. i presume being as its on at non-british hours it may be less high profile over here this time, but you can be sure there will be plenty of people going around trying to throw words like "silly mid-off" into conversation even though though don't know what it means.

either that or they'll be busy reading the da vinci code or doing a sudoku whilst listening to the latest james blunt album on their ipod, whilst the commemorative england world cup winners rugby shirt gathers dust at the back of their wardrobe.

I'm generally (very) anti hype as well Millward but am bothered about losing to the flaming Aussies at something. Also, I'm fine with people enjoying big events like the cricket as long as they don't pretend to be Mr Cricket (and I don't mean Jiminy Cricket) or Mr Rugby Union or whatever. I'll sit through England one dayers and a few hours of test matches here and there and that's it, but I’m happy with that.

Inconsistency watch - we're both Welsh. Presume you’re like me in that you hope England do well at stuff unless they're playing Wales in which case you always want Wales to win.

And further to a conversation on another blog, my fave funny rhyme is:

You’re a count-, you’re a count-, you’re a count-, you’re a country farmer.

With hairs on your nob-, hairs on your nobbly knees.

Oh dear. I’ve lowered the tone again haven’t I.

lunt, i generally agree with you - nothing wrong with getting involved with something that you normally don't get involved with, but its the "oh i simply LOOOOOVE cricket me" stuff that bothers me.

Yep, I am Welsh, and that wasn't some bitter anti-english tirade (and I know someone will point out "yeah, its the England and Wales cricket board" or some such). I'm the same with Wales in the rugby - I've never watched a game of rugby in my life and whereas I do like it when England beat Walesin the rugby (admittedly rare) I could never laud it up because that would be wrong.

Though here is the bitter anti-english tirade: i disagree with one of your points. I rarely ever want England to do well at stuff, and it does raise a smirk when they lose. I rarely ever actively want them to do badly though, I'm normally not bothered, particular at sports like cricket and rugby which don't interest me.

I must admit it was a relief when England got knocked out of the world cup this year because the media hype and proliferation of sloane rangers shouting "come on ingland! kick it wayne, do a shot. who do you want to win mark? aren't we doing well?" really get on my wick.

The fact it was a united player that was 'responsible' made it even sweeter in my eyes, as it gave these hangers-on a scapegoat instead of having to contemplate the fact that england may not be as good as GMTV and heat magazine made them out to be.

i hate it even more when someone then adds the gem "well if england weren't playing and wales were, we'd be shouting for them". that, in 99% of cases, is utter rubbish (censored for OG's familial duties).

And OG, pay attention to your friends' birthdays. This Leanne lady seems excited about her b'day expects an expensive gift and, as you're aware, it's my b'day on 8 Dec and I don't accept just any old cheap crap. A Tag Heuer would do if you're strapped for cash.

aye, leanne... i don't know you like but:

happy birthday

Nice one Millward, you've just trumped the present I'd got her - a picture of a battenburg.

I'm starting to learn...don't post anything pro-England.

Thanks Millhouse.

I'll have a pint of rubbish NZ beer for you tonight at my celebration dinner.
